Bye Bye Plastic Bags

” I have lived here for 13 years and I love and enjoy Bali, but I want to take care of it.” (Melati) The beautiful island of Bali is currently facing a waste crisis involving the over use of plastic bags, and sisters Melati and Isabel Wijsen are doing something about it.

Green School girls were insprired by Nelson Mandela, Lady Diana, and Martin Luther King. They got an idea one night at home when they were sitting just playing on their computer.Thats when the it hit them. Why not do something that helps the envioment and Bali.

Melati and Isabel

They found out that plastic bags were awful for the environment, so then they wanted to see if they could actually start something.  So they put the idea out just to see if anyone would think it was a fantastic thing or something that was not possible. They wrote a petition  just to see if they could really get people’s attention. When they woke up the next morning they found out they had 6,000 signatures. They knew then that they were ready to start something real.

As they picked the name Bye Bye Plastic bags and found a logo they did not imagine how far they would get. They had to go to meeting after meeting to get to the point where they are now.

Their goal is to get 1,000,000 signatures and to urge the goverment to stop the use of plastic bags.

A few of the projects they are working on is the Pilot Village and The Airport, along with tons of other events. BBPB got a very special privalege to get to go to theairport and collect signatures from the people that are waiting for their plane. They have seen all of Balis beautiful parts but also the trash.

The Pilot Village is a village that BBPB is helping to get rid of plastic bags in stores. They gave families bags so they could bring their own bags and not worry about using plastic. They have gotten the rights from all the villagers to work with them. Also they are working with the schools and kids, not only use the stores.Pilot Village

Almost every weekened they take their time to go and talk to people or meet people or go to events. We have had a some very important people come to Green School and the Bye Bye Plastic Girls have been able to meet them. Ban-Ki Moon, Jane Goodall, and a lot more people.

They have put all of their energy into something they believe in and it is good for the environment. Hopefully we will see Bali as a plastic bag  free island in the future.

What can you do to help?
