Green School Thespians in India

2

Over the summer, back in the San Francisco Bay area, I found myself at a dinner party with a friend of mine who is the Drama teacher at the American School in Chennai.  Shawn told me that he would be hosting an ISTA theater festival at his school in India.  The festival, called “Dignity, Equality, Safety”,would feature visiting artists from around the world creating theater with the theme of women’s rights.  I decided that night that I must take my students to this festival.

And here we are!  It feels like a dream.  Today we got to eat and explore a bit and got our students off to their home stays.  Ibu Emily and I were invited to stay with Shawn and it is so lovely to get to spend some time with a dear friend.

Tomorrow we will have our opening ceremony at 7:30 am which will kick off 3 days of professional development for Emily and myself and incredible instruction and direction for my students which includes several adventures into the community.  We will keep you posted each night about our adventures.  Here are some images from today:

Our first meal was so special. Four types of breads (Dosas, Iddlys etc) with chutneys and curries...all shared. Bliss.

The American School set us up with our own sweet bus so we can get around the city. So fun.

All of my female primary students asked me to bring them back bangles and bindhis. We are on it.

I grew up in California and Virginia. When I was in High School, we didn't have internet. Blogging wasn't invented. I didn't know anything about Bali or Mexico, places that later became home. I did like to make up songs back then, and that hasn't changed...but a lot has. I am the Performing Arts teacher at Green School and I have one of the best jobs in the world. What will be new when my students have students?
